Bennedict Mathurin’s older sister, Jennifer, played basketball at the collegiate level for North Carolina State University.
When Bennedict was just 12 years old, he experienced the tragic loss of his 15-year-old brother, Dominique, who passed away in a bicycling accident.
Elvie shared an incredibly close bond with Bennedict as they leaned on one another to grieve the untimely death of his older brother Dominique.
Dominique was more than just a sibling to Bennedict—he considered him his twin, his absolute best friend. The two brothers spent daily together, playing, laughing, and getting into trouble.
When Dominique died unexpectedly, it crushed both Elvie and Bennedict beyond belief. Their pain brought them together in a profound way.
Even though many years have passed since the death of Dominique, his memory continues to be honored and treasured by both Bennedict and his sister.
The time they shared with Dominique and their joyful memories of him remain essential to their lives and their family’s story.
Bennedict’s father, Felix Mathurin, sadly passed away when Bennedict was very young.
His mother, Elvie Jeune, was left to raise Bennedict and his two siblings as a single parent in Montreal.
As a nurse, Elvie worked incredibly long hours to support the whole family after Felix’s death.
In addition, losing her husband so early was very difficult, but Elvie tried to remain vital for her children.
Meanwhile, sources indicate that Bennedict’s father, Félix, had become estranged from the family well before his death.
For reasons unknown, he was not involved in his kids’ lives and had no relationship with his son Bennedict whatsoever.
Whatever happened with Felix forced Elvie to raise the kids entirely alone. But she ensured Bennedict knew the power of resilience, perseverance, and family.
Bennedict Mathurin’s late father, Felix Mathurin, and mother, Elvie Jeune, are both originally from Montreal, Canada, and hold Canadian citizenship. However, their ethnic background is Haitian, and they identify as black.
Though the Mathurin family calls Montreal home now, their roots extend back to the island country of Haiti.
At some point in the past generations, Felix and Elvie’s ancestors immigrated from Haiti and settled in French-speaking Quebec to start a new life.
Felix and Elvie grew up embracing both Canadian and Haitian culture, speaking Haitian Creole at home while learning French and English in Montreal schools.
They would later pass down the blend of multicultural traditions to their son, Bennedict.
